It’s time for Connecticut to open its primaries

“Nearly 1 million registered, unaffiliated voters in Connecticut will not be allowed to cast their votes in the taxpayer-funded presidential primaries on April 28 unless they go through a byzantine, little-known process to re-register to become either a Democrat or Republican.

Even though the primaries are publicly funded, the Democrat and Republican parties exclude unaffiliated voters, who represent 41.2 percent of all registered voters in the state. The exclusion is in effect “taxation without representation” because the Democratic and Republican primaries are funded not just by registered Democrats and Republicans but by every Connecticut taxpayer.”
